How to Create More Luck in your Job Search

It's time to take advantage of this new year, new you, and new job energy.

No matter what your resolutions are I think it's important to create your own luck this year so you can get to the next level and reach your goals.

Leveling up often requires expanding your surface area of luck.

What I mean is, learn to increase your chances of getting lucky by purposefully creating more opportunities for luck to happen to you.

Since I'm here to share tips on getting a new job in tech, I want to tell you how to create more luck in your job search this year.

On a high level it's about being brave enough to put yourself out there, build strong connections, and create a compelling career story.

If you are actively job hunting you must also conduct an on-point job search in order to get luckier and find success in this market.

You already know I'm a broken record about the ineffectiveness of only applying to jobs online. It doesn't work my peeps.

Stop waiting around to be picked. You'll be waiting a lot longer than you'd like.

So how can you create more chances to get lucky and land a new job?

Ask yourself these questions:

💡Who do I want to become?

Consider what kind of person you fundamentally want to become this year, and make that image as clear and specific as possible.

Include your vision for your next role – maybe you want to get a job in the next 30 days, or want to earn six figures, or maybe you want to change careers.

Whatever it is, get it on paper and be specific. Then be open-minded about how it will come.

It also helps to build a strong network of supportive acquaintances, colleagues, and friends who can help you get to where you want to go.

The more people who know what you are looking for and targeting, the better.

That friend-of-a-friend in your network is likely the person who will connect you to a new job.

💡What can I do that is beyond my normal routine or takes me out of my comfort zone?

Serendipity happens in the moments when you push yourself just a tiny bit to do something unexpected.

Try doing new things this year that maybe seem a bit scary.

In your job search, that might look like:

🙌🏽 Sending cold emails to strangers in your field
🙌🏽 Volunteering at an industry event
🙌🏽 Asking for a professional introduction
🙌🏽 Hiring a job coach
🙌🏽 Speaking at a business event
🙌🏽 Asking for help from a former colleague or boss
🙌🏽 Organizing an informational interview to learn about a new field

Experiment with new approaches and learn to do things in your 'stretch zone' more often.

Who knows, maybe that new person you met will be the person to refer you to your next gig.

Lucky breaks come from being consistent and trying new things.

💡How can I get in front of the right people or in the right room?

Opportunities won’t just fall into your lap, you gotta chase them by any means necessary, especially if you are job searching.

Many people waste a lot of time pre-evaluating a company and job opportunity before attempting to get an interview.

If you do anything differently in your job search this year, focus on getting in front of the hiring team as quickly as possible and as often as possible.

Don't be so picky upfront, get into the interview rooms and give yourself more at-bats.

There are endless advantages to this approach, including improving your interview skills, understanding the current market, and increasing your chances of getting multiple offers

Optimize for getting more interviews faster and figure out if the job is a fit during the interview process.

Moral of the story:

To land a new dream job in 2023 my challenge to you is this:
--get clear about what you want
--get in front of more people
--get out of your comfort zone

If you aren't actively job searching right now, I still suggest you do these things to have future opportunities come to you.

Always be creating your own luck my peeps.
