Tips to Improve Your Next Virtual Interview

If you have been interviewing recently (or anytime in the last 2 years), chances are you've primarily had virtual interviews.

Nearly all interviews are conducted via Zoom or some other video conferencing tool these days. No more going onsite. Woot!

But you already knew dat.

Here's the deal. Even though virtual interviews have been the norm for a few years, many still miss the mark on making a good impression on video.

Lez get into some tips on how to ace your next virtual interview and make a wowza first impression.

Some quick tips below:

🥥 Bring the energy.

My peeps, you are in control of the energy you bring to every interview. And let me tell you it makes a big difference. Being positive and energetic makes people feel good, which works in your favor when making a first impression. Bring it, no matter what.

🥥 Test your audio and camera prior to your call, but don't log in to the meeting too early.

Unlike onsite interviews where it's helpful to arrive 5-10 minutes early, on a video call you might be interrupting another meeting if you log in too early. So arrive 1 minute early at the most and make sure your sound is working.

🥥 Check your lighting.

Figure out where to sit and what lighting makes you look best. Ideally, sit 18-24 inches (arm's length) away from the screen during the call and have natural light (like from a window) on you. Avoid being back lit.

🥥 During the interview, make eye contact and gesture.

Smiling and using your hands when you talk helps the other person perceive you as more charismatic. Interviews are a performance, so be aware of what kind of show you’re putting on.

When you are preparing for the interview, I suggest you review common interview questions and practice your answers ahead of time.

It's very helpful to get feedback when you practice your interview responses.

A few ways to get feedback:

  • Video record yourself and watch the replay

  • Audio record yourself and listen to the replay

  • Do mock interviews with a friend or a coach

  • Practice saying your responses out loud to yourself in a mirror

You may feel awkward doing these things but you will be better prepared for the real interview.

Take the time to improve your game face so you appear as charismatic and as prepared as possible.

That's it for today's tea. Go get em!
