Why You Need To Curate Your Interview Answers

Hope you are hanging in there with all the layoff madness sweeping through tech.

Believe it or not, even with all of that happening there are still many jobs to be had.

The market will always swing back and forth between being an employer or an employee market. Right now we are back to being in an employer market.

Meaning there are more people looking for jobs than there are openings, so the competition is higher for each role.

But that just means you need to run a better job search and be the most prepared candidate.

Your interview skills and communication skills need to be sharp AF to get offers, so let's talk about it.

If you are qualified for the job but aren't getting offers, I suggest you audit your interview narrative because it may be falling flat.

Your interview answers and stories must be curated!

Contrary to what you might think, interviewing is not about being authentic.

It’s about convincing the hiring team that you’re the best hire.

Remember you must market yourself well to get interviews, and then you must sell yourself well in interviews to get offers. That’s it.

If you’re getting far in the interview process but aren’t landing the gig – reassess your interview performance.

Here are a few tips to set you on the right path during interviews:

  • Answer the core essence of the questions being asked - many people don't realize they are not actually answering the question, check yourself.

  • Make sure your stories are brief and easy to follow (try the STAR method)

  • Have your own agenda of points you want to get across during the interview - insert your curated stories that are relevant to the role.

  • Talk about achievements and accolades - this is your time to brag, so leave out things you don't want share more details on if asked.

  • Bring the energy - high energy shows passion, enthusiasm and interest, so bring it every time.

Expressing yourself with clarity, brevity and warmth takes practice. Put in the reps. 💪🏾

Remember interviewing is a skill you must practice.

Don’t worry if you’re not a master yet. But keep working at it.
