Negotiation Tips to Secure the Bag

As we wrap up 2021 and get ready for a holiday break, it’s time we talked about earning your worth and negotiating your salary in 2022 and beyond.

It's time you secure the bag, get your piece of the pie, and get that shmoney!

No matter what level you are in your career you can and should negotiate!

Salary negotiation can seem scary and bring up uncomfortable feelings of self-worth but remember it's just a conversation.

It’s an opportunity to make an extra 5-20k in a single 15-minute conversation. Who wouldn’t want that!

A few truths to help you reframe your idea about the salary negotiation process:

  • The company has spent 10s of thousands of dollars finding you, vetting you in the interview process, and now they want to hire you! They want this deal to happen and they want you to join the team.

  • There is no such thing as being greedy, asking for too much, or having more pressure to perform better if you ask for more money.

  • You are seen as a higher value candidate if you negotiate your offer.

  • Negotiating will not lose you the offer.

  • Companies expect you to negotiate, it’s a very normal part of the process.

Fact is, the company is negotiating with youwhether you are doing it with them or not. Don't leave money on the table.

Alright, now that you know you should be doing it, here is another tip I can't stress this enough: Stop asking for the bare minimum!

Don’t be fooled, companies will come back with a lower offer, or even match your bare minimum ask, and often candidates wish they had asked for more.

If you ask for your bare minimum salary expectation you’ll likely be disappointed. 😏

Instead, have an idea of what's most important to you in an offer before you get to the negotiation phase of the job search.

That way, you can qualify the company on these top requirements throughout the interview process.

Have you noticed recruiters always ask you on the first call about your salary requirements?

They want to ensure your expectations match their budget. So stay ready.

Do your research and are prepared to talk about salary requirements on the initial call.

The truth is that your negotiation starts as soon as you have that first conversation.

Here are 3 tips I recommend when preparing for salary negotiations:

  1. Position yourself as a 1% candidate and show them your value in the interview process. Ideally, have leverage when entering negotiations.

  2. Research! Do lots of research about salary rates for your role and your market. Ask peers what they earn for even better insight.

  3. Identify the top 3-5 things most important to you and negotiate for those first. Remember everything is negotiable, not just the money.

If you receive an offer, that means the company is interested and it's very normal for you to negotiate, so do it!

It’s your time to shine and get what’s yours! Cheers to 2022!
